Is it acceptable to answer friends emails at work?

May 29th, 2009

Yes, were at our jobs to work and earn money, but if you’ve gotten bored how can you produce your best work if you’ve switched onto ‘automatic pilot’?

Email in the office is a great way to do this, its discreet and you can pretend your answering an email from a client to help stave off boredom. The odd joke or message via email can help to put us in a good mood, whic can increase productivity, because when your bored or in a bad mood the first thing thats suffers is your work. People have lost thier jobs over emails which ended up being sent all over the country which contained questionable content, and managers are now worried staff arent working, but emailing their friends instead.

But most of us do sent an email or two at our friends -who doesnt? Has it really become that much of a danger to the workplace, or are our managers just over-reacting to this? Most people seem to have the balance right, and will actually get on with their work, but will answer the emails from their friends and still get their work done.

Social networking sites are a different matter altogether. The social networking website has taken the world by storm, and caused such a degree of fuss its been blocked off by many companies. ‘Facebook-ing’ your friends is much different than emailing people, as the live chat feature can cause people to get caught up in conversations. Can you see people really spending all day on this website? Commenting on pictures and updating their current status?

I think the main thing with these features is moderation. The key is not overdoing it and not letting it overtake your works prodcutivity, but most people are sensible enough not to let this happen -arent we?
